Fabien Mérelle’s wonderfully intricate drawings, as well as several of his realistic silicone sculptures, will be the subject of an important solo exhibition at La Rochelle, France. Since graduating from the Beaux-Arts Academy in Paris and spending several months on exchange at the Xi’An Academy of Fina Arts, Mérelle has been widely recognised for his incredibly delicate black ink on paper drawings. In recent years, Mérelle has expanded his practice to also include sculpture, which he approaches as an opportunity to realise, in three-dimensional form, the visions rendered on paper. The selected drawings and sculptures on display at La Rochelle exemplify Mérelle’s attentiveness to nature and his sensitive intuition vis-à-vis his environment and personal relations. Indeed, the exhibition presents Mérelle’s fantastical world, which takes inspiration from the quotidian and builds upon personal visions his mind has conjured.
