In his work “Possible Music #1 (feat. NESS & Shane Aspegren)” (2018), Samson Young plays upon our obsession with values of truth and authenticity by inventing an array of impossible musical instruments and digitally engineering their sounds. In this video, he talks about the militaristic origins of the sounds in his work and makes a connection between sound and politics, describing music as a “form of organizing.”

“Possible Music #1 (feat. NESS & Shane Aspegren)” was commissioned for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum’s permanent collection as part of The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Chinese Art Initiative. The final exhibition of the initiative, “One Hand Clapping,” is on view at the museum through October 21, 2018.
