Edouard Malingue Gallery, Hong Kong is pleased to present a duo exhibition of Syaiful Aulia Garibaldi (Indonesia, 1985) and Arin Dwihartanto Sunaryo (Indonesia, 1978) as part of an ongoing collaboration with ROH Projects, Jakarta. Following the gallery’s group show at ROH Projects in February, this reciprocal exhibition continues to develop greater dialogue with artists in Indonesia and the wider Asian Pacific region.

“ω is about finding parallels and divergences between and throughout two distinctive artistic practices: Arin Sunaryo and Syaiful Garibaldi (both based in Bandung, Indonesia).

ω is open-ended: it is open to multifocal possibilities, it is in flux, fluid-flow, in constant dialectic.

If a letter could be a palindrome, it would be the letter ω.

ω is interdisciplinary, used as a symbol in biochemistry, mathematics, linguistics and sociology.

ω follows the undulations of the exhibition space, tracing the sinuous contours of the gallery.

ω forms an act of investigating, perpetuating microcosmic universes.

Aesthetic modality is ω.

If ω is counter-intuitive, it is because it is paradoxical in its intent.

ω establishes time-lapses into eternity.

A narrative interweaving science fiction through observations in minutiae is ω.

ω binds, connects, and releases.

ω began as observations into a high-resolution inverted microscope (NIKON Eclipse TS2).

ω is equal parts organic and artificial, and yet, it is in an inbetween state of entropy.

ω explores the ‘inside’ to better understand the ‘outside’.”

Arin Dwihartanto Sunaryo is an artist based in Bandung, Indonesia and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Painting from the Bandung Institute of Technology (2001) and a Master’s of Fine Art at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London (2005). He is particularly interested in the use of resin as a medium that conserves minerals, pigments and other particles. He concentrates on the idea of expanding painting through investigating its core constituencies and forms. Recently his practice has begun to incorporate elements of video and new media, as well as sculpture. Arin’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions in South East Asia, Europe and the United States including an exhibition at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2013).

Syaiful Aulia Garibaldi obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) and currently works in Bandung, Indonesia. Syaiful, fondly known as Tepu, started off as a student of agriculture in university before pursuing experimental fine arts where he applies his scientific background to create a conceptual foundation for his art. Tepu’s works show a remarkably strong vision of art that collides with science in a graceful manner. His creation of an immersive environment was sparked by his interest in the networked and interconnected nature of ecologies, and the evocative power of microorganisms as symbols of death and decay, as well as life. Infusion between art and science transcends through Tepu’s work and gives way to a new gateway of knowledge, which is illuminated within his prints and installations.

ROH Projects was founded in 2012 with a vision to establish a leading gallery for the development of contemporary art in Indonesia and the greater Asia Pacific Region. It focuses on providing a platform for emerging artists with alternative practices as well as showing more developed artists in a nuanced and intellectually sound manner. ROH also presents its artists in an international scale and has shown with the most prestigious art fairs in Asia.
