Edouard Malingue Gallery is pleased to announce Ho Tzu Nyen’s latest show at the Nanyang Technological University Centre for Contemporary Art, Singapore (NTUCCA), ‘Ghosts and Spectres – Shadows of History’. A group show featuring four contemporary artists from across the region, the exhibition explores the shared consciousness which develops through a rich cultural history of myth, ritual and tradition.

Ho Tzu Nyen’s work is characterized by its strong emphasis on South East Asian history, resulting in heavily-researched video works which weave together narratives separated by time and place. Taking video footage from Hong Kong cinema, re-contextualised through re-directing the narrative, ‘The Nameless’ (2015) tells the story of infamous triple agent Lai Teck. Turning his attention to Euro-American films in ‘The Name’ (2015), Ho Tzu Nyen recasts the trope of a struggling male author. Accompanying the footage are texts from Gene Z. Hanrahan’s work ‘The Communist Struggle in Malaya’, displaying Nyen’s ability to expertly interweave vernacular myths and histories with colonial narratives, creating distinct and pluralistic responses to the region’s diverse history.
