It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Cho Yong-Ik, one of South Korea’s seminal modern artists who had developed a unique abstract language since the mid-1970s. He passed away on 2 July 2023.

We started collaborating with Cho in 2016, celebrating the original Scratch series from the 1970s and the ensuing Wave and Bamboo series from the following decades. Cho restlessly continued his artistic development in his eighties, and was in anticipation of yet another body of work, further expanding a highly meditative abstract practice that contemplates the critical act of breathing and the meaning of life, introducing new material and spiritual dimensions into painting. His artistic achievement and friendship are invaluable, and will be greatly missed.
