Samson Young is participating in the University of Chicago Art Museum’s group exhibition ‘Retrogarde’. Exploring contemporary artists’ recuperation and appropriation of avant-garde strategies, histories, and archives, ‘Retrogarde’ aims to address the politics of everyday life. The works featured in the exhibition adopt various recognisably avant-garde forms including the fusion of play with the profane, detourning language, space and matter, and working through performative actions and interventions. The exhibition highlights the continued relevance of avant-garde perspectives today, yet its simultaneous infusion of novel viewpoints, narratives and contexts opens up our collective reading of the avant-garde tradition.
