Pleased to share Su-Mei Tse’s participation in the third edition of TERRA, showing The Pond (2015) and Gewisse Rahmenbedingungen 3 (A Certain Frame Work 3 – Villa Adriana) (2015-2017) at Tour Renard.
TERRA is a cultural initiative weaving together art, terroir, and heritage through cross-disciplinary activations. TERRA features local and international artists, with a monumental annual show set in historic sites amidst Burgundy’s UNESCO-recognised vineyards. This autumn TERRA returns for its third edition, set against the evocative backdrop of one of the world’s most storied regions. Positioned at the vanguard of sensory exploration, TERRA fosters artistic dialogue and shapes how meaningful encounters with art and place are imagined and experienced.
The Pond (2015), in which the viewer stands over a photographic diptych of lilies within still, opaque water, layered with reflective glasses. When considering the mythological references to Narcissus, alongside the hyper-reflective material of the piece, one can examine the idea that the piece intends to evaluate the inescapable reality of psychological projection upon the perception of aesthetics, time and cultural-memory. Ultimately, it is the subtly layered, thematic exploration and cross-sensorial stimulation that are most interesting within Tse’s practice.
Gewisse Rahmenbedingungen 3 (A Certain Frame Work 3 – Villa Adriana) (2015-2017) was produced in collaboration with a juggler practicing contact juggling and is related to a place that represents important milestones in European cultural history: Villa Adriana built by the Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century in Tivoli. This legacy and the artistic references it generates are undermined by the video by approaching them via the prism of play, lightness, and movement. The result is images with an astonishing power of fascination: images of a “floating”, aerial world, in which the monument freed from their historical coating, are re-enchanted.
