Delighted to share Yang Chi-Chuan’s participation in BY ART MATTERS’ group show “Prosodic Grains”, presenting The Mumbling Tree (2023).

The Chinese title of the exhibition, “浮声切响” (fú sheng qie xiäng), originates from the exploration of tonal patterns and rhymes in Chinese linguistic culture. Whether in the five tones of music or the four tones of speech, they both reflect human perception of rhythm and the desire for expression and communication amidst the changing seasons and the passage of time.

The exhibition, themed around this idiom, brings together works by artists from various regions, including Allora & Calzadilla, Oliver Beer, Natalie Bookchin, Christine Sun Kim, CHANG Yuchen, and YAO Qingmei. These artists aim to connect works that reflect both the diversity and commonality of global cultures through language, rhythm, and pulse.

The exhibition aspires to help viewers transcend superficial barriers of miscommunication, enabling them to experience and convey the beauty of rhythm, and rediscover the fundamental desire for communication and mutual understanding. In the circulation and interaction of hearing, sight, and touch, the audience’s momentary sensations will be linked to private emotions, merging into collective memory. Together, they will enter a space of empathy that transcends time and place.
