Concurrent with “Daydreams”, an exhibition of Su-Mei Tse’s recent sculptural and photographic works at Kiang Malingue’s Sik On Street space that runs through November 23, 2024, Kiang Malingue presents at its 12/F Tin Wan space a selection of Tse’s photographic works from 2017 and 2018.
Nature has played a key role in Tse’s art since the beginning of her artistic practice in the 1990s. Her audiovisual sensibility as a musician has always drawn her to nature, in search of silence and inner peace. In the spirit of a painter, Tse explores the rhythmic dimension of nature—moments in time that reflect strong impressions of nature.
The works on view at Kiang Malingue’s Tin Wan space include large photographs that speak of nature as a fine-tuned whole, such as Forest (Reminiscences) (2018), and a series of “Reflection” photographs that painterly juxtapose verdant, reflected landscapes and gentle plays of light. A group of three “Plants and Shades” photographs, on the other hand, are more intimate in terms of both scale and scope: tender, seemingly insignificant growths in nature are highlighted as organic things that are inextricably involved in symbiotic relationships, as all sounds are. Shown alongside “Daydreams”, which provides a comprehensive tracing of Tse’s relation regarding the everyday life, “Su-Mei Tse: Selected Works” revisits the artist’s love for nature, into which one is freely interwoven.
